Tale of Tennis
From the sunrise till nightfall, days were passing by my way, staring at the pc writing mundane database scripts. I have this tendency to get fascinated, by people, habits and attractive initiatives. One of my colleagues who was my demi guru and used to inspire a lot during work and at private circumstances, posessing a versatile art of convincing people, Im sure you got the right guess!!! He is a sales person in deed...
Once he mentioned his intent to buy clothes for his family and his skills of budgeting being extremely good, calculated the cost that he would be incurring during the purchase. I was excited to see a man of such skills and planning start off for the mission, as he was not willing to go alone, had taken me in his car to the place where he usually gets his shopping done. The mall was a big one and a lot of attractive offers around, he thought he should slightly alter his budget and give room for such good featuring offers. He told me that seeing these attractive discounts, I should also get something for my family and asked some brief questions about my recent past on what I had done for my family? What a sudden realization? I just made up my mind that I got to get something for my family during this festive occasion! We were suddenly lost in that crowd, and finally realized that we should have to meet at the car park... After the heavy swipe and the utilization of the purchasing power of salaried, met him at the carpark and realized that he had not even overshooted his budget by 5%. Myself, the one who hardly wished to grab something ended up spending heavily and wondering whether I should go back home, since the much awaited bamboo's on its way... Apart from this incident and a few others, I had a constant will to outlast such circumstances.
Calling myself busy all day and not participating in any of the social gatherings, family and for myself, there arose a sudden buddha trying to find whats the way out of such inertia. I had decided to enrol myself to a gymnasium, and start looking at my health very consiously. Suddenly when I was searching for a proper gymnasium, I had met up with one more influenzer. My pal at college and a thick friend of mine met up on my way shared his thoughts on my idea to enroll to a gym nearby. He had described the pains that he had gone through on the initial days when he started exercising and then when he wanted to discontinue. The idea was without re-considering dropped. Once on a working day, in office hours I was reading newspaper and suddenly the sales associate came and pulled the magazine off my hand and was browsing through something.. Inquisitive mind asked me to run behind him and peep through what he was browsing? I was surprised not to see a jeniffer lopez or a britney spears... It was an ad which he was going through and it was an ad for tennis classes. Initially not interested in the same, I hurried back to my seat to the same dumb SQL..
After due enquiries and some calls to the coaching center, the man ultimately destined for the wimbledon was hurrying to the place.. After meeting the coach and having a little chat with him, the man came disgusted worrying about the added expenditure that he had to incur due to this class.. Finally he met me and shared with me his enthusiasm for the game and the exciting things about the game.. Since I was looking for a fitness camp, the man suggested that this would as well serve as that. Looking at my past experiences I thought I shouldn't give a try.. I cautiously tried to stay away from his gaze & get rid of his current tennis spree.. I had not met him for a couple of days, and finally went to him to discuss something formal. But I had to catch up with him for a coffee that evening, at our favorite joint... The guy started off his experiences at the camp and he said he really enjoyed it.. Certainly of deliberation, I changed the topic of discussion to some official politics which was going on at that moment, the guy went into lecture mode and had his free bit of advise.. After an hours discussion, the guy had a recap of his camp.. I thought of praying that minute and I could only listen to his serious speech..
The guy told me that he wouldn't insist me to join his latest venture and he wanted me to give him company to the camp once... I thought he's so considerate and fair, the same instant trying to imbibe a very important advise. I said I would join for the session and we were set to go to the camp... There's the beginning of the new episode... Seriously driving towards the camp, the guy didn't allow us to hear some music.. I was keeping mum at that moment and there came the camp.. Without realizing I got inside with him and watched him struggle with his borrowed heavy rackets.. He was enthusiastic and trying to impress me at the game he played some horrible rallies… The coach was trying to tell him that he had to turn his wrists when he plays a shot in forehand or on a backhand. The man not hearing the same tried to hit a ball which he is supposed to play in the backhand, without shifting the wrists the man tried to give a backhand smash… Bang!!! He threw the racket which was borrowed from his neighbor somersaulted in the air for about 5 seconds and held the ground…
I couldn’t stop laughter and gave him a stare. He was saying this is all part of the game and then I started to get the curiosity as the coach preached about the game.. Then I said I also would like to enroll to this camp and learn the game… The coach enthusiastically notified me of the procedure and asked me to fill up a form, which was lengthier than the college application that I had filled in. Finally I finished the procedure and suddenly realized I was short of cash to pay him the fees.. The man happily took me the office room where they had a credit card machine… One more swipe… To my surprise and advantage the machine didn’t work at that time.. But by the time I had convinced myself that I will learn tennis and play for some time…
Then our next day at the camp started the payment was done in cash for both of us and the coach had advised us to get our own rackets and he had offered that he would help us to find some good ones.. He had a sample yonex racket which was in the color of honey and the moment I saw it, I wanted to grab it. But the man was much more aggressive than me and he immediately paid the coach 2.5 grands to get the same.. The coach told us that it was no hurry to get the racket, he would get other good rackets too.. I took the words of the coach and I was waiting for mine, and the man instantly got his racket done. The next day the coach came with 3 rackets, two of which were yonex and one was a Wilson racket. The yonex ones were average and the Wilson was extremely good. He said it was the best deal for this racket and it was cheap, If we were to get the same from the market it would cost us 5 grands currently costing only 3. Finally I decided to take this one and before I inform the coach, the man went to him and told him that he would like to exchange his yonex racket with this one and he would pay the balance to him. But the coach replied to him, that the yonex one was already been paid to the manufacturer and it cannot be exchanged and he gave a better deal to him. He asked me to take the yonex one and then he can pay the balance, but unfortunately though, I was not ready for the deal. I said I will take the Wilson and let him have his Yonex. Finally we had again spent on the racket..
After a couple of classes the coach asked us to do the serve thing and both of us tried our own serves… We had played enough rallies by that time and then we were trying our serves.. We were humiliated to see a 10 yr old kid serving hard and every serve of his reaching the right spot.. Both of us couldn’t serve and we thought we were worth nothing and we abused ourselves for our inability. But the coach told us that this guy is at the camp for the last 1 year every day spending almost 4 hours at the camp. After around 5 sessions, we were able to serve decently. After a couple of classes we had decided to play games between ourselves, and we played a couple of games.
We were excited and suddenly he was missing for the classes, and not to be seen at the office too… Then I tried speaking to him, was offended to know that he had a back pain and a tennis elbow… But I couldn’t believe that he would have a tennis elbow considering his exaggerating nature.. But the mate had real problems with his back… Gone were those days wherein three days of a week the man travels in a bike and 2 days in his car to save his petrol and his wallet, he had to use his car alone to commute.. Unfortunately I lost a good companion at the classes and there were only kids playing there and unfortunately, my ego didn’t allow me to continue. There ended the episode and we were successful in selling our rackets to our acquaintances….
